Wanaque, Ramapo Rivers Stocked For Fall Trout Season

WANAQUE, N.J. — The Wanaque and Ramapo rivers are scheduled to be stocked with trout on Friday, Oct. 16, as part of the the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife’s annual fall river stocking program.

The NJDEP Fish & Wildlife Division will stock rivers in Passaic and Bergen County with trout this coming week.

The Wanaque River, which starts at the Greenwood Lake dam and flows through Hewitt to the Monksville Reservoir in Ringwood then through the Wanaque Reservoir through Wanaque into Pompton Lakes, is slated to receive 330 trout.

The Ramapo River, a tributary of the Pompton River, starts in central Orange County, N.Y., flows through Harriman State Park before crossing into New Jersey and flowing past the eastern ridge of the Ramapo Mountains. The Ramapo River, which will be stocked with 890 trout, flows into Potash Lake in Oakland and officially ends at Pompton Lake in Passaic County.

Over the next week, the NJDEP will stock the state’s major trout waters with more than 20,000 trout. The fish are approximately 2 years old and come from the Pequest Trout Hatchery in Warren County.

According to NJfishfinder.com, the following baits, lures and flies are recommended at both rivers:

Soft Baits: Chartreuse salamander, Senko
Wet Fly: wollybugger, olive, conehead
Worm: 4" Watermelon Yamamoto, Texas rigged
Minnow: Live shiners, top water baits shallow crank bait. Troll in deeper water
